How do I know what kind of speakers I have in my home theater?

Question by Jim I: How do I know what kind of speakers I have in my home theater?
About ten years ago I bought a home theater system from a buddy of mine strapped for cash. I bought a receiver, tape deck, five-disc player with two large speakers.

Large = 20.5″x16″x36″. They are carpeted, and have a large hole on the bottom to put a pole up into. There are carrying handles on either side, and the speakers must weigh 70-80 lbs.

The fronts are identical. Vertically, there are two circles with nipples in them (sorry, have no idea how else to describe), then a horizontal opening, then a large round “speaker” at the bottom.

There’s no markings on them on the outside, and I don’t want to tear into them too deep without knowing what I have.

The reason I want to know what to look for is because I want to sell the set-up, and need to know what I have.

Any help, websites, or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

What kind of stuff do you need to have a nice home theater?

Question by tjs323: What kind of stuff do you need to have a nice home theater?
Im new to all this home theater stuff, and I need to know what to buy, to have a small home theater. I have the projector, so thats off the list. I have no clue what to buy for a mini home theater. I here people talking about HDMI, HDTV, and Recievers. But I dont know what that stuff is. I also need help with buying the correct cables and setting it up.

Answer by vipermike2k6
first off, don’t buy one of those home theater in a box (HTIB) systems. Get a Yamaha RX-VXXX receiver. A blue-ray dvd player, and some decent speakers….floorstanding, bookshelf or in-ceiling/in-wall. Klipsch, Polk, Monitor Audio, Energy, Boston Acoustics are all great brands with a wide range of style/price. DO NOT WIMP OUT ON THE CABLES!!! Get a good power conditioner (doesn’t have to be Monster Cable) but you are better off WITH one than w/o. Don’t buy the extended warranties on the speakers but do buy it on the reciever.

What kind of certification is the most helpful to becoming a home theater installer/designer?

Question by Read F: What kind of certification is the most helpful to becoming a home theater installer/designer?
I have been installing basic home theater systems for people over the last few years, however I am not certified or fully trained. I worked with Mark Levinson for a while so I picked up a lot, but I would really like to expand my business and get fully certified. What kind of license/certification will prepare me the most for home theater design and installation, and also which will give me the best business opportunities once I’ve completed my certification?

Thanks for any advice.

What kind of home theater system should i purchase?

Question by Extreme Mayhem: What kind of home theater system should i purchase?
I currently have a samsung (HCN653W) TV and am looking for a home theater system to hook up to it. I am looking for a system that is around $ 500. This should include the receiver and speakers. I only want it to be Dolby 5.1 and want to be able to hook up a dvd player, my tv, and possibly a blu-ray player for the future. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I also do not want wireless speakers. I only hear bad comments about wireless.

Ugh! That thing is huge! I had to really dig for a pic of it & find it’s specs. Anyway, at best it’s highest resolution is 1080i. It’s actually outdated by a couple of years. My recommendation is the link below. It gives you everything you asked for including Blu-ray. It should work well w/ your TV. It’s twice of what you wanted in your budget, but in this day & age these toys are getting more expensive. 0 would not have given you anything decent in terms of quality. Shop around a bit & see if you can’t find that system at a better price. I do recommend you buy from these folks b/c they back up everything they sell 100%. I order from them all the time. Even if I find an item at a better price elsewhere. Their customer service & shipping speed is hard to beat. G’luck!

What kind of electronics can I use on an airplane?

Question by Jorge: What kind of electronics can I use on an airplane?
When the flight attendant say, “You may now use your electronics,” what kind of electronics can I use? Can I use a phone? If I had an iPhone, could I be able to use the internet or something? And why aren’t you allowed to use electronics sometimes when you fly on a plane anyway?

Best answer:

Answer by LoLo!
Well, you are allowed to use electronics like gaming systems, and ipods/ mp3 players. You cannot however ever use phones because they interfere with the pilot’s connection to the air traffic control tower.
