ETEN X600 Review

The ETEN X600, the successor of ETEN’s X500 has the smallest dimensions when compared to all the other models of the company and rivals the LG KS20 as well as the HTC Touch. As with all ETEN mobile phones, the X600 also runs on Windows Mobile 6 and has a built in GPS with a SirfStar III chipset as well as WiFi.

The ETEN X600 has a 2.8” QVGA display which is able to reproduce a total number of 65 536 colors. The picture on the screen is well saturated and contrasting colors and you would have absolutely not trouble reading what is displayed on the screen even under bright light. But as will almost all smartphones, the camera on the X600 is mediocre. It has a 2-megapixel camera which doesn’t have auto-focus but does have a mirror for taking self-portraits.

As the ETEN X600 wasn’t really made to be a camera phone, don’t expect its image quality to be impressive. The colors in the photos are unrealistic even in well lighted-areas. More often than not they are over or under exposed due to the lack of an auto-focus feature. There is also no flash available so taking pictures in the dark is rather impossible.

The X600 comes with the standard mobile version of Windows Media Player which can play both audio and video files. The ETEN X600 works with .avi files coordinated with DivX3, 4 and 5 and at a high bitrate too, but it is rather unfortunate that it doesn’t work as well as one would expect. The image or audio often breaks up and this could be blamed on the limited resources which makes a great feature quite useless.

The phone also comes with a built in FM tuner which is commonplace for ETEN phones. I think it’s a great addition, especially for people on the go because they won’t have to stream music or news from another party. The lovely X600 phone also comes with a built in GPS receiver and that latest SIRF III chipset. The SIRF III allows for an increased GPS sensitivity which could be useful when you’re trying to find your way in an indoor environment, in urban canyons as well as under heavy foliage. For extra accuracy, the SIRF III chipset is supported in both WAAS in the US or EGNOS systems in Europe.

Sound Quality isn’t exactly the X600’s strongest point, but it could be considered in the above average level. Sound from both directions, during a call is quite clear but is slightly muffled making them sound unnatural.

If you are looking for a compact version of Windows Mobile Phone which has great functionality, then you should definitely consider the ETEN X600. But at the same time you should also note the disadvantages like the low quality of the camera, and the lack of 3G. But even with the cons take into consideration, the X600 is not at all shabby. It just depends on what functions you want your phone to have.
