Brother HL-2040 Printer Review ZDNet
Editors’ rating: 7.1 Very good
Editor’s take: The Brother HL-2040 is a fast monochrome laser that fits tight budgets and small workspaces that have no need for fancy paper handling or a beefy work flow.
The good: Fast text and graphics; low price; small footprint.
The bad: Can’t expand memory or paper capacity; only fair graphics output.
What’s it for: Personal use, including forms, documents, papers, and letters.
Who’s it for: Students, writers, and single-person offices.
Business use: This machine will fit a cubicle or a very small shop for good quality, text-only printing.
Essential extras: You’ll have to replace the starter toner cartridge after about 1,500 pages, and you’ll need to buy a USB or parallel cable.
The bottom line: The Brother HL-2040 makes a fine first laser printer. To serve a small workgroup, seek its sibling, the HL-2070N.
