Why do companies request that you send defective electronics directly to them?

Question by Andrew W: Why do companies request that you send defective electronics directly to them?
This is a question of pure curiosity. Why do companies request that you send defective electronics directly to them, rather then return it back to the store?

A couple reasons,
1. Usually you have to call first which will get you talking to someone who may be able to fix your problem.
2. It’s a pain in the butt and expensive mailing packages so alot of people will just never get around to it.
3 It is way cheaper for the company to fix or replace the item than it is to refund the full price to the store.

All of this is just to help the company. Why deal with the hassle ? Just return it to the store. If the store wont take it dont shop there anymore as plenty of stores have ok return policies.

Q&A: what causes electronics to stop working when they are put in water?

Question by Hunter: what causes electronics to stop working when they are put in water?
This may seem like a stupid question, because it’s just common sense that when electronics get wet, they stop working; they short circuit. I understand that water conducts electricity, and well, that it is wet, but i cannot place any other attributes to it in regards to electricity.

If the only thing that goes wrong is a short circuit, then explain to me what that means exactly. If there are other events that are going on that are currently unknown to me, it would be good if you explained those as well.

A short circuit is when the resistance goes to zero. It’s like placing a wire across two other wires of a circuit, you have now short circuited that part of the circuit which can change the way the circuit behaves. If you did that across many parts of the circuit, the way water does, you can cause a drastic change in the currents and voltages around the circuit which can damage the electrical components.

How high can the temperature be in my electronics cabinet?

Question by Robert C: How high can the temperature be in my electronics cabinet?
I have several AV components (Cable Box, TiVo, XBox 360, AV Receiver, etc) that I am keeping in an enclosed cabinet (glass front). I am worried about it getting too hot in the cabinet, especially for the XBox which is notorious for overheating. I added a small fan near the top of the back of the case, which I think is helping. I have thermometers in the cabinet that do not exceed 95 degrees F, but I’m not sure if that’s still too hot. Is there a good rule of thumb for electronics ambient temperature?

It is wise to keep it as cool as possible to prevent overheating.
