Q&A: Could you suggest a list of things to get to start experimenting with basic electronics?

Question by Daniel: Could you suggest a list of things to get to start experimenting with basic electronics?
I have a whole lot of resistors, lots of LED’s and a multimeter. I used to have some other things but I lost them.

I’m going to the electronics store later, and then me and a friend are going to research and experiment. Could you guys give me some suggestions for what parts to buy?

I know i need to get a breadboard, some transistors, diodes and capacitors. What else?

Well, I don’t know what kind of experiment you will do, maybe you can try:

Jumper cables

potentiometers

inductors

solder

batteries

transformers

Q&A: How hot would it have to be for electronics to get damaged?

Question by SC: How hot would it have to be for electronics to get damaged?
Like i always keep my room at like 65-75 degrees, so i know that is nothing but i was wondering how hot would a room have to possibly get for like CDs or DVDs or any electronics to become damaged. I would guess it would have to be extremely hot with the the sun shinning right through the windows and my room’s thermostat would have to be set to like 100 degrees. But anyway i was just curious?

It varies from device to device, and even from one instance of a device to another of the same make and model. In addition, it depends on what the actual temperature of the device itself is getting up to. This can vary depending on whether there’s air flow over it, whether there’s a lot of dust built up on it, whether it has a heat sink and so on.

Generally the chips I actually bother to monitor are rated for something approaching as high as 70C, 80C or even 100C sometimes, but I try to keep them well below that, below 50C if I can.

Most of your “server farm” enviornments are kept air conditioned pretty heavily most of the time, below 70F generally at least.

Yeah, if your room has a high ambient temp, like over 75 or 80F, yeah if your electronics aren’t cooled properly, yeah that could possibly cause a problem, maybe. Especially for PC stuff. Your tv and so on might not be so sensitive.

I don’t think your CDs or DVDs are going to be so temp sensitive, unless they start to melt. That would have be pretty hot. They can be sensitive to light though. You should keep them in a dark place.

I have a lot of electronics in my car and I don’t know what the best way to power all of them are. I’m a storm chaser and a volunteer ff. I have a decent amount of lights, a siren/pa system, a couple radios, a computer, a camera, and a few smaller electronics like my phone. 10 pts to BEST ANSWER!

then you should set your car up like the police do, an extra alternator to charge a pair of batteries in the trunk, a fuse box meant only for those extra electronics, and run all the extra stuff off those batteries only.

Question by lojo: What is the difference between a GPS system and a digi-walker?
Is there a GPS system that I can put in my car but that also can be taken out and used when walking in an unfamiliar area or do they all do this? Is a digi-walker different from a GPS system? Is there a product that can serve both functions?

Best answer:

Answer by Norm
Hi Lojo,

A digiwalker is just a glorified pedometer that has a GPS built in.

You can get a more sophisticated GPS that works in your car and then as you leave your car you “mark” your location. You can also use it to find a location as you walk. Then when you are ready to return to your cay it will guide you directly there.
